Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional Australia was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 65 to 69 year olds, increasing by 129,126 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Regional Australia in 2021 compared to Greater Adelaide shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 18.7% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 20.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.9% and 17.1% respectively for Greater Adelaide.

The major differences between the male age structure of Regional Australia and Greater Adelaide were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 65 to 69 (6.2% compared to 5.1%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (5.7% compared to 4.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 20 to 24 (5.5% compared to 6.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 25 to 29 (6.0% compared to 7.2%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Regional Australia's male population increased by 910,408 people (28.3%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.26% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 65 to 69 (+129,126 males)
  • 60 to 64 (+125,482 males)
  • 70 to 74 (+119,317 males)
  • 55 to 59 (+93,031 males)
