In 2021, the largest age group in South Australia was 25 to 29 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2011 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 17,257 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of South Australia in 2021 compared to Regional WA shows that there was a similar proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.8% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 18.6% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.3% and 16.9% respectively for Regional WA.

The major differences between the male age structure of South Australia and Regional WA were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 20 to 24 (6.4% compared to 4.8%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 15 to 19 (5.8% compared to 4.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 50 to 54 (6.5% compared to 7.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 45 to 49 (6.2% compared to 7.0%)
