Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional NSW was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 36,503 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Regional NSW in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 18.6% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.0% and 16.3% respectively for Australia.

The major differences between the male age structure of Regional NSW and Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (5.9% compared to 4.5%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 65 to 69 (6.4% compared to 5.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 35 to 39 (5.8% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (5.8% compared to 7.2%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, Regional NSW's male population increased by 192,488 people (16.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.0% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+36,503 males)
  • 65 to 69 (+32,433 males)
  • 60 to 64 (+26,829 males)
  • 25 to 29 (+20,255 males)
