Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in South East Queensland was 35 to 39 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 42,179 people.

The Age Structure of South East Queensland provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care. It is also an indicator of South East Queensland's residential role and function and how it is likely to change in the future.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of South East Queensland in 2021 compared to Tasmania shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.7% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.5% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.5% and 19.7% respectively for Tasmania.

The major differences between the male age structure of South East Queensland and Tasmania were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 40 to 44 (6.6% compared to 5.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 65 to 69 (4.6% compared to 6.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 60 to 64 (5.3% compared to 6.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (4.3% compared to 5.5%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, South East Queensland's male population increased by 567,111 people (48.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.98% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+42,179 males)
  • 65 to 69 (+40,503 males)
  • 70 to 74 (+38,813 males)
  • 35 to 39 (+38,606 males)
