Location and boundaries

The City of Holdfast Bay is located in the south-western coastal suburbs of metropolitan Adelaide, about 10 kilometres from the Adelaide CBD. The City of Holdfast Bay is bounded by the City of West Torrens in the north, the City of Marion in the east and south, and Gulf St Vincent in the west.

Traditional Owners

The original inhabitants of the Holdfast Bay area were the Kaurna Aboriginal people.

Name origin

The City of Holdfast Bay is named after the bay, which was named by Colonial William Light. In 1836 the HMS Rapid was standing off the coast near the Patawalonga River when a gale sprang up. The anchor held, so Light called it Holdfast Bay.

Settlement history

European settlement dates from 1836 when the first settlers arrived at Glenelg. Land was used mainly for farming. Growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, spurred by the opening of railway lines from Adelaide and the construction of many mansions and holiday homes along the coast. Rapid development took place from the post-war years into the 1960s. The population of the City increased slightly from the mid 1990s, rising from about 31,000 in 1996 to about 34,500 in 2011.

Land use

The City of Holdfast Bay is a predominantly residential area, with some commercial land use in Brighton and Glenelg, and an industrial area in Somerton Park. The City encompasses a total land area of about 14 square kilometres.

Transport

The City of Holdfast Bay is served by the Anzac Highway, Brighton Road, Tapleys Hill Road, the Noarlunga railway line and the Glenelg-Adelaide tramway.
