Dominant groups

Analysis of the female service age groups of the City of Yarra in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 12.1% of the female population was aged between 0 and 17, and 17.1% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 20.6% and 21.4% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The major differences between the female age structure of the City of Yarra and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Young workforce' (30.1% compared to 15.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Primary schoolers' (4.6% compared to 8.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Secondary schoolers' (3.5% compared to 6.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Older workers & pre-retirees' (10.0% compared to 12.1%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, City of Yarra's female population increased by 1,495 people (3.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.66% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the female age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+646 females)
  • Tertiary education and independence (18 to 24) (-364 females)
  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+338 females)
  • Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59) (+334 females)
