Willoughby City

Housing tenure

In Willoughby City Council 52.7% of people born overseas were in households who were purchasing or fully owned their home, 43.4% were renting privately, and 1.2% were in social housing in 2021.

Willoughby City Council's Housing Tenure data provides insights into its socio-economic status as well as the role it plays in the housing market. For overseas-born, housing tenure shows how migrants are accommodated in the area. This is highly correlated with the age of migrant communities - older communities are likely to have more home ownership. In some areas, public housing is an important tenure type for migrants, even long established communities.

To build a more complete picture of the story of the area for the overseas-born population, Housing Tenure data should be viewed in conjunction with Dwelling Type, Household Income and Age Structure data.

Please note that the ABS definition of "Rented" in 2021 changed to exclude "Occupied Rent Free", which is now included under "Other tenure type". Please take care when comparing the "Rented" and "Other" categories between 2016 and 2021; most overseas-born communities show some increase in the "Other" category due to the definitional change. This represents a very small proportion of the population (generally 1-2%) and has minimal effect on the overall view of tenure types in overseas-born populations.
