Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Epping North in 2021 compared to the City of Whittlesea shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 35.4% of the population used English only, and 60.0% used a non-English language, compared with 50.2% and 45.1% respectively for the City of Whittlesea.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Epping North was Punjabi, with 10.0% of the population, or 3,800 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Epping North and the City of Whittlesea in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Punjabi at home (10.0% compared to 4.3%)
  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (8.1% compared to 5.2%)
  • A larger percentage using Hindi at home (3.7% compared to 2.0%)
