There were 40 people over the age of 85 living in Mernda in 2016, with largest age group being 0 to 4 year olds.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Mernda in 2016 compared to City of Whittlesea shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 27.3% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 5.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 21.4% and 11.7% respectively for City of Whittlesea.

The major differences between the age structure of Mernda and City of Whittlesea were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (12.4% compared to 8.2%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (12.4% compared to 9.1%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (9.9% compared to 7.9%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 5 to 9 (8.6% compared to 7.0%)

Emerging groups

From 2011 to 2016, Mernda's population increased by 10,794 people (126.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 17.79% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2011 and 2016 were in the age groups:
