Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in the City of Whittlesea in 2016 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a larger proportion of people born overseas, as well as a larger proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 35.5% of the population was born overseas, and 32.0% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 33.8% and 27.0% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in the City of Whittlesea was India, where 5.6% of the population, or 11,115 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in the City of Whittlesea and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (2.8% compared to 0.4%)
