South Morang is bounded by Quarry Hills Bushland Park, Skyline Drive, a line running through the suburb of South Morang, Hunters Lane, Plenty Road, Wilton Vale Road and a line running continuous of Wilton Vale Road in the north, the Plenty River in the east, the transmission line, Plenty Road, Allwyn Crescent, Bush Boulevard, Buick Crescent, Civic Drive and Border Drive in the south, and Yvette Court, McDonalds Road, Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium, Findon Road and Quarry Hills Bushland Park in the west.
South Morang is named for the area south of Morang (now Mernda), which is an Aboriginal word thought to mean "cloudy" or "sky".

Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1980s. Rapid development took place during the 1990s, with the population quadrupling between 1991 and 2001 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area. Even faster growth took place between 2001 and 2011, primarily from the Hillcroft, Mill Park Lakes and Waterstone Hill Estates. Growth is expected to continue.
South Morang is a recent and rapidly developing residential area, with commercial areas and an electricity terminal station in the south, rural areas in the north, and substantial parklands in the east.
Major features of the area include Westfield Plenty Valley Shopping Centre, Plenty Valley Town Centre, South Morang Shopping Centre, Axis Lifestyle Centre, Plenty Gorge Park (including Hawkstowe Picnic Area, Middle Gorge Picnic Area, Red Gum Picnic Area, Morang Wetlands, LePage Homestead and Nioka Bush Camp), Hendersons Creek Wetlands, Hillcroft Park, Hillsview Recreation Reserve, Lakes Nature Reserve, Mill Park Lakes Recreation Reserve, Poppy Park, Red Oaks Park, Riverside Reserve, South Morang Reserve, Vincent Park, Zieria Park, the Whittlesea Municipal Offices & Civic Centre, Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre, T.U.K.E. Go Kart Track, the South Morang railway station and numerous schools.
This small area encompasses most of the suburb of South Morang, and small parts of the suburbs of Epping and Mill Park.
