Dominant groups

Analysis of the non-English speaking population in the City of Whitehorse in 2021 compared to the total population in the City of Whitehorse shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 15.3% of the non-English speaking population was aged between 0 and 14, and 14.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 15.9% and 18.5% respectively for the total population in the City of Whitehorse.

The major differences between the age groups of the non-English speaking population in the City of Whitehorse and the total population in the City of Whitehorse were:

  • A larger percentage of people aged 35 to 39 (10.4% compared to 7.2%)
  • A larger percentage of people aged 30 to 34 (9.8% compared to 6.9%)
  • A larger percentage of people aged 40 to 44 (8.2% compared to 6.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of people aged 15 to 19 (4.1% compared to 5.9%)

From 2016 to 2021, City of Whitehorse's non-English speaking population increased by 9,082 people (15.3%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.88% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age groups of the non-English speaking population in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 35 to 39 (+2,282 persons)
  • 40 to 44 (+1,416 persons)
  • 5 to 9 (+1,371 persons)
  • 20 to 24 (-1,144 persons)
