Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the City of Whitehorse in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 55.9% of the population used English only, and 40.5% used a non-English language, compared with 61.1% and 34.1% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the City of Whitehorse was Mandarin, with 16.2% of the population, or 27,362 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of the City of Whitehorse and Greater Melbourne in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (16.2% compared to 4.3%)
  • A larger percentage using Cantonese at home (5.5% compared to 1.6%)
  • A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (0.3% compared to 1.8%)
  • A smaller percentage using Punjabi at home (0.7% compared to 2.0%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 9,172 or 15.4%, and the number of people who used English only decreased by 1,636 or 1.7%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in the City of Whitehorse between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+6,396 persons)
  • Cantonese (+702 persons)
  • Italian (-488 persons)
  • Chinese, nfd (-480 persons)
