Underdale is bounded by the River Torrens in the north, Hardys Road in the east, Henley Beach Road in the south and Mellor Avenue and a line running continuous of Mellor Avenue in the west.

Name origin

Underdale is thought to be named from a word alluding to a dale under or near Adelaide.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for market gardens and vineyards. Growth took place in the early 1900s and during the interwar period. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population was relatively stable between 1996 and 2006, and then increased between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.

Underdale is an established residential area.
