Torrensville is bounded by the River Torrens in the north, South Road in the east, Henley Beach Road, Rankine Road and Hounslow Avenue in the south and Marion Road, Henley Beach Road and Hardys Road in the west.

Name origin

Torrensville was previously known as New Thebarton.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, although growth was minimal until the late 1800s. Residential and industrial growth took place from the early 1900s. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population was relatively stable from the early 1990s, a result of few new dwellings being added to the area.

Land use

Torrensville is an established residential area, with an industrial area in the north, and commercial areas along Henley Beach Road.

Major features of the area include Thebarton Aquatic Centre, Thebarton Community Centre, Thebarton Oval, Kings Reserve, Frank Norton Reserve, Brickworks Markets and two schools.
