Name origin

Cowandilla is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning "the locality of the waters". Hilton is named after Matthew Davenport Hill, an original land holder.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s. Growth took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population and dwelling stock declined slightly between 1991 and 2001, were relatively stable between 2001 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011.

Cowandilla - Hilton is an established residential area, with commercial areas along Sir Donald Bradman Drive.
