For instance, people with a need for assistance may have priority in access to public housing, so the social housing category may be higher. This can give an insight into the housing arrangements of this community and indicate the success of housing programs for people with a disability.

Please note: The ABS changed the definition of 'Occupied rent free' in 2021 so that it now falls under the "Other tenure type" category. Users may notice a small increase in this category but it is expected to have negligible effect on the tenure type distribution overall.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the housing tenure for people reporting a need for assistance in Tweed Shire Council in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a larger proportion of people with a need for assistance in households who owned their dwelling; a smaller proportion purchasing their dwelling; and a smaller proportion who were renters.
Overall, 49.3% of people reporting a need for assistance were in households who owned their dwelling; 19.1% were purchasing, and 26.7% were renting, compared with 44.9%, 20.7% and 29.8% respectively for Regional NSW.

The total number of people reporting a need for assistance in Tweed Shire increased by 1,040 between 2016 and 2021.
