Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in The Hills Shire in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (12,690 people or 13.2%)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (11,146 people or 11.6%)
- Education and Training (8,942 people or 9.3%)
In combination, these three industries employed 32,778 people in total or 34.0% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Greater Sydney employed 13.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 10.9% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 8.5% in Education and Training.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of The Hills Shire and Greater Sydney were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (8.1% compared to 7.0%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in construction (9.2% compared to 8.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (3.3% compared to 5.1%)

- Financial and Insurance Services (+3,493 persons)
- Construction (+3,111 persons)
