In Eastern Region Alliance area, 22% of people spoke a language other than English at home in 2016.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of Eastern Region Alliance area in 2016 compared to the City of Tea Tree Gully shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 74.3% of the population spoke English only, and 21.8% spoke a non-English language, compared with 83.8% and 12.6% respectively for the City of Tea Tree Gully.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in Eastern Region Alliance area was Italian, with 4.2% of the population, or 12,269 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of Eastern Region Alliance area and the City of Tea Tree Gully in 2016 were:

  • A larger percentage speaking Italian at home (4.2% compared to 1.8%)

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in Eastern Region Alliance area between 2011 and 2016 were for those speaking:
