Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1840s, with land used mainly for grazing and farming. Some growth took place during the late 1800s. Significant development did not occur until the 1960s and 1970s. The population fluctuated slightly during the 1990s, largely due to changes in dwelling stock. The population declined slightly between 2001 and 2011, a result of little change in dwelling stock and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
