Dominant groups

Analysis of the female service age groups of the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to New South Wales shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 8.8% of the female population was aged between 0 and 17, and 13.9% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 20.8% and 24.6% respectively for New South Wales.

The major differences between the female age structure of the City of Sydney and New South Wales were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Young workforce' (32.9% compared to 14.1%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Tertiary education & independence' (12.9% compared to 8.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Primary schoolers' (3.1% compared to 8.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Seniors' (5.6% compared to 10.6%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, City of Sydney's female population increased by 479 people (0.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.1% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the female age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Tertiary education and independence (18 to 24) (-5,803 females)
  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+3,247 females)
  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+1,092 females)
  • Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+719 females)
