The role of unpaid childcare in the City of Sydney is determined by many different factors. For example areas with high levels of unpaid child care may have a dominance of single income families with one significant earner, or there could be a lack of provision of paid child care in the area. Some overseas-born communities, particularly those with multiple generations speaking the same language, may have a higher level of extended family care for children than the wider population.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the unpaid child care provided by the Indonesian speaking population in the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a lower proportion of persons who provided unpaid child care either to their own or to other children. Overall, 13.6% of the Indonesian speaking population provided unpaid child care, compared with 29.1% for Greater Sydney.
The major differences between the share of the Indonesian speaking population providing unpaid child care in the City of Sydney and Greater Sydney were:
- A larger percentage who did not provide care for children (85.0% compared to 69.9%)
- A smaller percentage who provided unpaid child care (all) (13.6% compared to 29.1%)
- A smaller percentage who provided unpaid childcare for own child/ren (12.5% compared to 26.3%)
- A smaller percentage who provided unpaid childcare for other child/ren (1.0% compared to 2.7%)
Emerging groups
The number of Indonesian speakers who provided unpaid child care for their own and/or other people's children in City of Sydney increased by 182 between 2011 and 2021.
The largest changes in the number of Indonesian speakers performing unpaid child care in the City of Sydney, between 2011 and 2021 were those who:
- No unpaid child care provided (+978 persons)
- Cared for own child/ren (+186 persons)
- Provided unpaid child care (all) (+182 persons)
