Dominant groups
Analysis of the country of birth of the non-English speaking population in the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to the total population in the City of Sydney shows that there was a larger proportion of people born overseas.
Overall, 83.8% of the non-English speaking population was born overseas, compared with 48.5% for the total population in the City of Sydney.
The major differences between the countries of birth of the non-English speaking population in the City of Sydney and the total population in the City of Sydney were:
- A larger percentage of people born in China (excludes SARs and Taiwan) (21.3% compared to 7.8%)
- A larger percentage of people born in Thailand (7.6% compared to 3.0%)
- A larger percentage of people born in Indonesia (6.8% compared to 2.7%)
- A smaller percentage of people born in New Zealand (0.6% compared to 2.7%)

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of non-English speakers born overseas decreased by 3,969 or 6.0%,
The largest changes in birthplace countries of the non-English speaking population in this area between 2016 and 2021 were for those born in:
- China (excludes SARs and Taiwan) (-4,014 persons)
- Korea, Republic of (South) (-1,158 persons)
- Colombia (+853 persons)
- Thailand (-718 persons)
