The Number of Bedrooms in a dwelling is an indicator of the size of dwellings, and when combined with Dwelling Type information, provides insight into the role the City of Sydney plays in the housing market for non-English speaking populations.
For example, where non-English speaking populations are mainly students, one bedroom and bedsitters may be dominant. Upgrader areas housing families could have larger separate dwellings, while smaller units may be common for downsizers among older migrant communities.
To the extent that there may be a mismatch between bedrooms and Household Size, this topic can also look at the potential for overcrowding in particular communities, or the availability of extra bedrooms.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the number of bedrooms in dwellings for non-English speakers in the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Inner Sydney Region, shows that there was a higher proportion of non-English speakers in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and a lower proportion of dwellings with 4 or more bedrooms.
Overall, 74.8% of non-English speakers were in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and 5.7% in 4 or more bedroom dwellings, compared with 53.0% and 20.0% for Inner Sydney Region respectively.
The major differences between the number of bedrooms per dwelling non-English speakers in the City of Sydney and Inner Sydney Region were:
- A larger percentage of people in 0 or 1 bedrooms (26.8% compared to 13.3%)
- A larger percentage of people in 2 bedrooms (48.0% compared to 39.7%)
- A smaller percentage of people in 4 bedrooms (4.0% compared to 12.4%)
- A smaller percentage of people in 3 bedrooms (18.2% compared to 25.9%)
Emerging groups
The largest changes in the number of bedrooms per dwelling for non-English speakers in the City of Sydney between 2016 and 2021 were:
- 2 bedrooms (+591 persons)
- 5 bedrooms or more (-364 persons)
- 4 bedrooms (-248 persons)
- 3 bedrooms (+63 persons)
