Dominant groups
Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Chippendale in 2021 compared to the City of Sydney shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 39.0% of the population used English only, and 52.5% used a non-English language, compared with 58.0% and 34.8% respectively for the City of Sydney.
The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Chippendale was Mandarin, with 22.0% of the population, or 1,717 people using this language at home.
The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Chippendale and the City of Sydney in 2021 were:
- A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (22.0% compared to 8.6%)
- A larger percentage using Indonesian at home (4.3% compared to 2.1%)
