Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Sydney shows that there was a higher proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 10.3% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 4.3% were one-parent families, compared with 7.8% and 3.7% respectively for Sydney.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 38.3% compared to 34.1% in Sydney while the proportion of couples without children was 28.2% compared to 30.5% in Sydney.

Emerging groups

The number of households in City of Sydney increased by 63,296 between 1991 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in the City of Sydney between 1991 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+24,287 households)
  • Couples without children (+23,082 households)
  • Couples with children (+6,131 households)
  • Group household (+5,243 households)
