The City of Sydney's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which recent arrivals (who are residents) work. The work destination may be in the local area or elsewhere.
The type of work done by recent arrivals is influenced by their age structure, qualifications and migration stream. Many of Australia's recent migrants are skilled arrivals who fill identified skill gaps in particular occupation groups.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by recent overseas arrivals in City of Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (7,786 persons or 35.6%)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (2,520 persons or 11.5%)
- Managers (2,406 persons or 11.0%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 12,712 people in total or 58.2% of the employed recent overseas arrivals.
In comparison, Greater Sydney employed 30.5% in Professionals; 12.6% in Community and Personal Service Workers; and 9.4% in Managers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the recent overseas arriving population of the City of Sydney and Greater Sydney were:
- A larger percentage of people employed as Professionals (35.6% compared to 30.5%)
- A larger percentage of people employed as Managers (11.0% compared to 9.4%)
- A smaller percentage of people employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (4.4% compared to 7.0%)
- A smaller percentage of people employed as Labourers (10.3% compared to 12.7%)
