This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in South West Queensland ROC in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (2,611 people or 22.3%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (1,427 people or 12.2%)
- Public Administration and Safety (971 people or 8.3%)
In combination, these three industries employed 5,009 people in total or 42.9% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Regional QLD employed 4.3% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 15.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 5.6% in Public Administration and Safety.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of South West Queensland ROC and Regional QLD were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (22.3% compared to 4.3%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (8.3% compared to 5.6%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (12.2% compared to 15.4%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (6.6% compared to 9.6%)

The number of employed people in South West Queensland ROC decreased by 253 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in South West Queensland ROC were for those employed in:
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (-166 persons)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+133 persons)
- Public Administration and Safety (-125 persons)
- Retail Trade (-111 persons)
