When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Illawong's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Illawong in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (1,017 people or 27.4%)
- Managers (656 people or 17.6%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (596 people or 16.0%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 2,269 people in total or 61.0% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, Dolans Bay - Port Hacking employed 30.8% in Professionals; 20.1% in Managers; and 15.8% in Clerical and Administrative Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Illawong and Dolans Bay - Port Hacking were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (13.0% compared to 11.0%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Labourers (5.1% compared to 3.4%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Professionals (27.4% compared to 30.8%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Managers (17.6% compared to 20.1%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Illawong decreased by 471 between 2011 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2011 and 2021 in Illawong were for those employed as:
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (-222 persons)
- Sales Workers (-101 persons)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (-56 persons)
