Location and boundaries
The Strathfield Council area is located in the inner-western suburbs of Sydney, about 14 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. The Strathfield Council area is bounded by the City of Canada Bay in the north-east, the Burwood Council area in the east, the City of Canterbury Bankstown in the south and south-west, and the Cumberland Council area and the City of Parramatta in the north-west. The Council area's boundaries are Homebush Bay Drive in the north, Powells Creek, The Boulevarde and Coronation Parade in the east, Punchbowl Road and Juno Parade in the south, and Roberts Road, the Hume Highway, the Rookwood Necropolis and the Sydney Olympic Park railway line in the west.
Traditional Owners
The original inhabitants of the Strathfield area were the Wangal clan of the Darug Aboriginal people.
Name origin
Strathfield is named after an early property in the area.

Settlement history
European settlement dates from the mid 1790s, with land used mainly for farming. However, many of these early farms were abandoned due to poor soils. Population was minimal until the mid 1800s, aided by the opening of stations along the Sydney to Parramatta railway line. Growth took place in the late 1800s. Expansion continued during the 1920s. Significant development occurred during the 1960s and 1970s, with many units and townhouses built, particularly around the railway stations. The population of the Council area was relatively stable during the early 1990s. The population increased from the mid 1990s, rising from nearly 26,000 in 1996 to 35,000 in 2011. Much of the recent growth has been from high and medium density housing.

The Strathfield Council area is a predominantly residential area, with some industrial and commercial land use. The Council area encompasses a total land area of approximately 14 square kilometres.
