First Nations households may be more or less likely to have access to vehicles in some areas based on socio-economic status and the availability of public transport in the area. The number of vehicles can also be related to the number of adults and older children in the household.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the car ownership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in the City of Ryde in 2021 compared to North Sydney Council area households shows that 87.3% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households owned at least one car and 9.7% did not, compared with 77.1% and 21.4% respectively for North Sydney Council area households .
Of those that owned at least one vehicle, there was a smaller proportion who owned just one car, a larger proportion who owned two cars, and a larger proportion who owned three cars or more.
Overall, 38.6% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households owned one car, 32.2% owned two cars, and 16.5% owned three cars or more, compared with 46.3%, 20.4% and 10.4% respectively for North Sydney Council area households.
The major differences between car ownership for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in City of Ryde and North Sydney Council area households were:
- A larger percentage of 2 motor vehicles (32.2% compared to 20.4%)
- A larger percentage of 3 or more motor vehicles (16.5% compared to 10.4%)
- A smaller percentage of No motor vehicles (9.7% compared to 21.4%)
- A smaller percentage of 1 motor vehicle (38.6% compared to 46.3%)
