More Rockhampton residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Rockhampton's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Rockhampton in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (6,670 people or 18.0%)
  • Education and Training (3,650 people or 9.9%)
  • Retail Trade (3,575 people or 9.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 13,895 people in total or 37.6% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Parkhurst - Limestone Creek - Mount Archer employed 15.7% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 12.5% in Education and Training; and 9.1% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Rockhampton and Parkhurst - Limestone Creek - Mount Archer were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (18.0% compared to 15.7%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (1.8% compared to 0.5%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (5.7% compared to 4.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (9.9% compared to 12.5%)

The number of employed people in Rockhampton increased by 2,650 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Rockhampton were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,477 persons)
  • Construction (+373 persons)
  • Education and Training (+302 persons)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (-132 persons)
