Dominant groups
Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the City of Port Phillip in 2021 compared to IMAP area shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 72.5% of the population used English only, and 21.0% used a non-English language, compared with 63.1% and 30.9% respectively for IMAP area.
The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the City of Port Phillip was Greek, with 2.5% of the population, or 2,590 people using this language at home.
The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of the City of Port Phillip and IMAP area in 2021 were:
- A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (2.1% compared to 6.0%)
- A smaller percentage using Vietnamese at home (0.5% compared to 3.3%)
- A smaller percentage using Cantonese at home (0.7% compared to 2.0%)
Emerging groups
Between 2001 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 6,377 or 42.3%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 18,568 or 33.6%.
The largest changes in the languages used by the population in the City of Port Phillip between 2001 and 2021 were for those using:
- Spanish (+1,565 persons)
- Mandarin (+1,425 persons)
- Russian (-775 persons)
- French (+587 persons)
