Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by recent overseas arrivals in City of Port Phillip in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 43.8% of recent overseas arrivals spoke English only, and 55.6% spoke a non-English language, compared with 16.5% and 82.3% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The dominant language spoken at home by recent overseas arrivals, other than English, in City of Port Phillip was Spanish, with 11.2% of the population, or 1,010 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the recent overseas arriving population of the City of Port Phillip and Greater Melbourne in 2021 were:
