In 2021, there were more recent overseas arrivals living in the City of Perth who worked as professionals than any other occupation.

The City of Perth's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which recent arrivals (who are residents) work. The work destination may be in the local area or elsewhere.

The type of work done by recent arrivals is influenced by their age structure, qualifications and migration stream. Many of Australia's recent migrants are skilled arrivals who fill identified skill gaps in particular occupation groups.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by recent overseas arrivals in City of Perth in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Professionals (1,372 persons or 33.7%)
  • Community and Personal Service Workers (739 persons or 18.1%)
  • Labourers (565 persons or 13.9%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 2,676 people in total or 65.7% of the employed recent overseas arrivals.

In comparison, Greater Perth employed 21.2% in Professionals; 18.1% in Community and Personal Service Workers; and 17.5% in Labourers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the recent overseas arriving population of the City of Perth and Greater Perth were:

  • A larger percentage of people employed as Professionals (33.7% compared to 21.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (3.7% compared to 8.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Labourers (13.9% compared to 17.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (9.7% compared to 12.6%)
