Bar Beach is bounded by Darby Street and Brooks Street in the north, Greenslope Street and the suburb of The Hill in the east, the Tasman Sea in the south, and the suburb of Merewether and Kilgour Avenue in the west.

Name origin

Bar Beach is named after a natural rock pool in the area which was known as "The Bar".

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the early 1900s. Growth took place from the 1920s when land was released for residential development. Expansion continued during the post-war years. The population fluctuated slightly between 1991 and 2006, and then was stable between 2006 and 2011, a result of small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
