Location and boundaries

Rural Remainder is bounded by Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire in the north, the Shire of Wandering and the Shire of Boddington in the east, Pinjarra-Williams Road, the Shire of Boddington, the Shire of Waroona and the Murray River in the south, and Harvey Estuary, Peel Inlet, a line running continuous of Greenlands Road, Greenlands Road, and the localities of Pinjarra, Ravenswood and North Dandalup in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, although population was minimal until the 1870s. The main industries at this time were farming and fishing. Growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, spurred by timber milling, the opening of the railway line, and the establishment of the township of Dwellingup. Grain growing and vegetable farming became important industries. Population growth resumed during the early 1970s when the Alcoa alumina refinery opened. The population fluctuated slightly between 1991 and 2006, and then increased between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.

Land use

Rural Remainder is a predominantly rural area, with a small township at Dwellingup. Land is used largely for grazing, orcharding and equine activities, with some mining.

Major features of the area include North Dandalup Dam, South Dandalup Dam, Lake Banksiadale, Peel Inlet, Harvey Estuary, Alcoa Alumina Refinery, Huntly Bauxite Mine, Forest Heritage Centre, Hotham Valley Tourist Railway, Newbliss Winery, The Wine Tree, WA Skydiving Academy (Pinjarra Dropzone), Pinjarra Paceway, Don Spark Reserve, Dwellingup Oval, Estuary Park, Marginata Park, Marrinup Park, Coolup Community Hall, Dwellingup Community Hall, Marrinup State Forest, Lake McLarty, Lake Mealup, Nine Mile Lake, the Bibbulmun Track, the Munda Biddi Trail, the Murray River, the South Dandalup River and one school.

Included areas

Rural Remainder encompasses the localities of Banksiadale, Birchmont, Blythewood, Coolup, Dwellingup, Etmilyn, Fairbridge, Holyoake, Inglehope, Marrinup, Meelon, Myara, Oakley, Point Grey, Solus, Teesdale, West Coolup and Whittaker, the Shire of Murray part of the locality of Keysbrook, and the southern parts of the localities of Nirimba and West Pinjarra.
