Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the early 1830s, with land used mainly for grazing and farming. Population was minimal until the 1860s when the township developed. Population growth took place during the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway line and growth in the timber industry. Significant development occurred from the early 1970s, spurred by the opening of the nearby Alcoa aluminium refinery, with staff housing constructed in the northern part of Pinjarra from the late 1970s. The population increased gradually between 1996 and 2006, and then increased more substantially between 2006 and 2011 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area.
