In the Perth Metropolitan Area, 17% of people spoke a language other than English at home in 2011.

The Perth Metropolitan Area's language statistics show the proportion of the population who speak a language at home other than English. They indicate how culturally diverse a population is and the degree to which different ethnic groups and nationalities are retaining their language.

The Perth Metropolitan Area's language statistics should be analysed in conjunction with Country of Birth and Proficiency in English to assist in identifying specific cultural and ethnic groups in the area and the services required by the multicultural community.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of the Perth Metropolitan Area in 2011 compared to Greater Perth shows that there was a similar proportion of people who spoke English only, as well as a similar proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 77.9% of the population spoke English only, and 16.7% spoke a non-English language, compared with 77.8% and 16.6% respectively for Greater Perth.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in the Perth Metropolitan Area was Italian, with 1.6% of the population, or 28,414 people speaking this language at home.

There were no major differences between Perth Metropolitan Area and Greater Perth in 2011.

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2011, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 85,403 or 42.2%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 129,955 or 10.7%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in the Perth Metropolitan Area between 2006 and 2011 were for those speaking:

  • Mandarin (+10,366 persons)
  • Filipino/Tagalog (+7,265 persons)
  • Afrikaans (+5,265 persons)
  • Arabic (+4,021 persons)
