Location and boundaries

Eastern District is bounded by the Mid Murray Council area in the north, the Rural City of Murray Bridge in the east, the Alexandrina Council area in the south, and the locality of Wistow, Lake View Road, Back Callington Road, Springs Road, the locality of Mount Barker Springs, Williams Road, Springs Road, the locality of Mount Barker, the South Eastern Freeway, the locality of Dawesley, the Princes Highway, Military Road, Range Road, Warmington Run and Boundary Road in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1840s, spurred by copper mining at Callington. Some growth took place during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The population has increased substantially since the early 1990s, doubling between 1991 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.

Land use

Eastern District is a predominantly rural and rural-residential area. Land is used largely for farming.

Major features of the area include Mount Barker Summit, Callington Recreation Park, Hutton Reserve, Kanmantoo Reserve, Harrogate Cemetery, Harrogate Hall and one school.

Included areas

Eastern District includes the localities of Harrogate, Kanmantoo, Mount Barker Summit, Petwood and St Ives, and the District Council of Mount Barker parts of the localities of Callington and Mount Torrens. Part of the locality of Callington is located in the Rural City of Murray Bridge, while parts of the locality of Mount Torrens are located in the Adelaide Hills and Mid Murray Council areas.
