Name origin

Brunswick West is named for the area west of Brunswick, which was thought to be named after Princess Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of King George IV.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1800s, although population was minimal until the early 1900s. Rapid growth took place during the early 1900s, aided by a government settlement scheme. Expansion continued in the 1940s and 1950s. The population was relatively stable between 1991 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.

Brunswick West is an established residential area, with some light industry.
