The size of Essendon's labour force in 2016 was 11,525, of which 3,924 were employed part-time and 6,846 were full time workers.

Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) in Essendon in 2016 compared to the City of Moonee Valley shows that there was a higher proportion in employment, and a lower proportion unemployed. Overall, 94.9% of the labour force was employed (63.2% of the population aged 15+), and 5.1% unemployed (3.4% of the population aged 15+), compared with 94.3% and 5.7% respectively for the City of Moonee Valley.
