Airport West is named for its location, being west of Essendon Airport. Essendon Fields is named after the company which developed the commercial centre in recent years.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years. Rapid growth took place from the 1970s. The population declined slightly between 1991 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.
