Analysis of individual income levels in Hawthorn in 2011 compared to the City of Mitcham shows that there was a higher proportion of people earning a high income (those earning $1,500 per week or more) as well as a higher proportion of low income people (those earning less than $400 per week).

Overall, 21.3% of the population earned a high income, and 34.4% earned a low income, compared with 16.5% and 33.7% respectively for the City of Mitcham.
