Location and boundaries

West Region is bounded by Cross Road in the north, Goodwood Road, Penang Avenue, Richmond Avenue, Winston Avenue, Corunna Avenue, Goodwood Road, Springbank Road, Strathcona Avenue and the railway line in the east, the northern edge of Watiparinga Reserve, the suburb of Eden Hills, Mill Terrace, Shepherds Hill Road, Bellevue Drive, a line running continuous of Bellevue Drive and the suburb of Bellevue Heights in the south and the Sturt River, Main South Road and South Road in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1830s, with land used mainly for farming, orcharding and market gardening. Some growth took place in the late 1800s. Significant development occurred during the early 1900s, continuing into the interwar period. Growth continued in the post-war years. The population declined marginally during the 1990s, then increased slightly between 2001 and 2011.

West Region is a residential area with some institutional land use.

Major features of the Region include Flinders University, Flinders Medical Centre, TAFE SA (Panorama Campus), Repatriation General Hospital, Flinders Private Hospital, Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia Women’s Memorial Playing Field, St Marys Park and a number of schools.

West Region includes the suburbs of Bedford Park (part), Clarence Gardens, Cumberland Park, Daw Park, Melrose Park, Panorama, Pasadena and St Marys.
