Non-English speakers - Introduction

In 2011, there were 31,590 non-English speakers living in the City of Melton.

The non-English speaking population is the term used for people who speak a language other than English at home. The term does not imply that this population can't speak English, just that English is not their first language or is not the language they use at home conversing with family members.

The non-English speaking population is an extremely important one in Australia, as immigration is integral to our national identity, and has increased markedly since 2006. Information on non-English speakers is vital for planning local government activities such as community services, library collections, translation services, as well as planning for types of dwellings and community infrastructure.

Please note that the term Culturally and Linguistically Diverse is an umbrella term which can refer to Birthplace, Language, Ancestry and Religion. It doesn't specifically define any group and so is not used in the communities of interest profile.

Derived from the Census question:

'Does the person speak a language other than English at home?'

Data notes

For dwelling related topics (household type, household income, bedrooms etc), only household members who state that they speak a language other than English at home are included in the table. If more than one household member speaks a language other than English, there will be multiple counts for the same household in the table. People who did not answer the language question are excluded.
