There were 3,298 people over the age of 85 living in the Macarthur Region in 2016, with largest age group being 5 to 9 year olds.

The Age Structure of the Macarthur Region provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care. It is also an indicator of the Macarthur Region's residential role and function and how it is likely to change in the future.

Five year age groups present a classic age profile of the population. Each age group covers exactly five years, which enables direct comparison between each group.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of the Macarthur Region in 2016 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 22.3% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 11.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.7% and 13.9% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The major differences between the age structure of the Macarthur Region and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 10 to 14 (7.1% compared to 5.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 5 to 9 (7.6% compared to 6.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (7.6% compared to 6.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (6.9% compared to 7.9%)

Emerging groups

From 2011 to 2016, Macarthur Region's population increased by 37,807 people (15.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.9% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2011 and 2016 were in the age groups:

  • 30 to 34 (+5,053 persons)
  • 65 to 69 (+4,153 persons)
  • 5 to 9 (+3,311 persons)
  • 25 to 29 (+3,054 persons)
