Service age groups divide the population into age categories that reflect typical life-stages. They indicate the level of demand for services that target people at different stages in life and how that demand is changing.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the service age groups of Division 8 in 2021 compared to Division 3 shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 27.7% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 15.3% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 25.2% and 19.8% respectively for Division 3.

The major differences between the age structure of Division 8 and Division 3 were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Young workforce' (17.8% compared to 13.3%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Babies and pre-schoolers' (8.6% compared to 6.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders' (18.4% compared to 21.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (8.3% compared to 10.5%)

Emerging groups

From 2011 to 2021, Division 8's population increased by 11,654 people (56.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 4.59% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 2011 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (+2,897 people)
  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+1,392 people)
  • Tertiary education and independence (18 to 24) (+1,337 people)
  • Primary schoolers (5 to 11) (+1,321 people)
