Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Liverpool LGA in 2021 compared to Lurnea shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 39.5% of the population used English only, and 53.8% used a non-English language, compared with 32.2% and 58.9% respectively for Lurnea.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Liverpool LGA was Arabic, with 13.1% of the population, or 30,501 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Liverpool LGA and Lurnea in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Assyrian/Aramaic at home (3.0% compared to 0.6%)
  • A larger percentage using Hindi at home (3.4% compared to 1.7%)
  • A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (13.1% compared to 32.1%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 19,544 or 18.4%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 7,633 or 9.0%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Liverpool LGA between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Arabic (+7,254 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+2,496 persons)
  • Assyrian/Aramaic (+2,124 persons)
  • Urdu (+1,601 persons)
