Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Liverpool in 2021 compared to Liverpool LGA shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 28.2% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 14.1% were one-parent families, compared with 44.2% and 14.2% respectively for Liverpool LGA.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a similar proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 26.3% compared to 16.3% in Liverpool LGA while the proportion of couples without children was 17.1% compared to 17.0% in Liverpool LGA.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Liverpool increased by 2,464 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Liverpool between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+1,206 households)
  • Couples without children (+587 households)
  • One parent families (+315 households)
